🩺 Medical Education Commission (MEC) Nepal: Entrance Examinations
Overview
The Medical Education Commission (MEC) of Nepal is the central authority responsible for conducting standardized entrance examinations for medical and health science programs across the country. Established in 2018 under the National Medical Education Act 2075, MEC ensures a fair and merit-based admission process for both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

🧪 1. MECEE-BL (Bachelor Level)
The Medical Education Common Entrance Examination – Bachelor Level (MECEE-BL) is mandatory for students seeking admission to various undergraduate medical and health programs in Nepal. These include:
- MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery)
- BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery)
- BSc Nursing
- BSc Midwifery
- BASLP (Bachelor of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology)
- BPerfusion Technology
- BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery)
- BNS (Bachelor of Nursing Science)
- BSc MLT (Medical Laboratory Technology)
- BSc MIT (Medical Imaging Technology)
- BPharm (Bachelor of Pharmacy)
- BOptometry (Bachelor of Optometry)
- BPT (Bachelor of Physiotherapy)
- BPH (Bachelor of Public Health)
The MECEE-BL consists of 200 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and has a duration of 3 hours. Candidates may apply for multiple programs but must submit separate applications and fees for each.
🎓 2. MECEE-PG (Postgraduate Level)
The Medical Education Common Entrance Examination – Postgraduate Level (MECEE-PG) is essential for admission into postgraduate programs such as:
- MD (Doctor of Medicine)
- MS (Master of Surgery)
- MDS (Master of Dental Surgery)
- Other medical postgraduate programs
Eligibility includes the completion of the relevant undergraduate degree and registration with the appropriate professional council.
🩻 3. DM/MCh Level
For super-specialty programs, MEC conducts entrance exams for DM (Doctorate of Medicine) and MCh (Magister Chirurgiae). Candidates must hold an MD or MS degree in the relevant specialty and be registered with the Nepal Medical Council or an equivalent authority.
The exam includes 200 MCQs covering:
- Applied basic sciences
- General medicine/surgery
- Subspecialty subjects
- Research methodology
- Medical ethics
📚 Exam Syllabus and Pattern
The MECEE-BL syllabus is based on the National Examination Board (NEB) curriculum for Grades 11 and 12, covering:
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Mental Agility (20 MCQs)
Each question has four options, and there is a negative marking of 0.25 for every incorrect answer.

- Bank voucher or deposit slip
- Recent passport-sized photograph
- Academic transcripts
- Professional council registration certificate (if applicable)
- Equivalence certificate (for foreign +2 graduates)
- Citizenship certificate (Nepali nationals) or passport/Aadhaar (foreigners)
🌍 For International Candidates
International students must also take the MECEE. However, those who have passed a national-level entrance examination in their home country may be exempted depending on MEC guidelines.

- Exam Dates: Scheduled by program type over multiple days
- Results: Published on the MEC portal within 2–3 weeks

Background
As per provision of the National Medical Education Act 2075, in the context of the essence and spirit of the reports of the commission, committee and task force formed to improve medical education at different times; Medical Education Commission has been established to:
- increase the investment of the state in the field of medical education,
- develop medical education in line with the national needs of Nepal,
- regulate medical education in integrated and efficient way,
- organize the work related to the establishment and operation of medical institutions,
- maintain quality, professionalism, institutional accountability, geographical balance and social justice in medical education,
- ensure equal access of all students including the deprived.
The Act defines medical education as education of all disciplines and levels related to the health profession (Health Professional Education).
